Easy Jazz Concepts
Basic Jazz Concepts is a lesson built on the topic of triads.
The idea is to think outside of scales and start thinking in terms of triads
with respect to the chord changes. Since triad shapes are easy to remember
there are some interesting ideas we can get from playing this way. In a
nutshell, every major chord voicing can be broken up into two triads. A major
triad based off the root note and another major triad built off the 5th.
Similarly, we can use a minor triad over both our root and our 5th,
when playing over a minor chord voicing. What gets interesting though is when
we play over dominant 7th chord voicings. Now we can base a major
triad over the root note and a minor triad over the 5th. Add in some
leading tones and some chromatics from our blues scales and we are well on our
way to playing swing. This lesson begins with a little theory as I show you how
this works and how it really falls out of our scales anyways. I scratch out a
lick and then we move over to the guitar. With a little adjusting to the lick
we just created based off of triads, I come up with the main melody you can
hear in the lesson example. It is that easy.
